I always push a moby or a ring sling onto my new mama pals :) I wouldn't have survived the first 3 months without my moby which was the gateway to a few other carriers :) Your site has been such an inspiration and wealth of knowledge for wearing (and all things parenting!).

A close second would be aden & anais swaddle wraps - another life saver those first couple months!

A ring sling J lived in it for her first few months and has a simple enough learning curve for those not interested in learning to wrap. We still use it on occasion at 18 months but as she is uber independent she prefers to walk 95% of the time. Mine is a Ella Roo woven and was cool enough for even the hottest summer days.

I don't specifically recommend an item, but I always mention that they should look into babywearing and a stretchy wrap for newborn cuddles. I also always recommend reading about sleep before the little one arrives because I was floored when confronted with the newborn sleep challenges (and all those thereafter too) :)

I love this idea of gathering readers comments!

Car seat strap covers. Kind of a silly one, but it is something we didn't think of until a friend with a newborn mentioned them to us. We got them before our son was born when we couldn't stand the thought of his little neck being rubbed by scratchy seat belts when he fell asleep in the car.

1) nursing pads
2) yoga pants
3) baby carrier (pouch/SSC)
4) chapstick
*this list has gotten me through two newborns and continues to get me through the hardest of days with a toddler and a 10.5 month old!

Do you really have to ask? =) I always recommend a baby carrier of some sort. I usually recommend a wrap because of their versatility. I don't know how I would have managed life with a newborn without one. Heck, I don't know how I would manage life with a toddler without one. They allow Ethan to nap or observe his surroundings. They allow me to clean, run errands, and get school work done. They keep him close and cuddly, and they prompt conversations with total strangers about parenting (four conversations in one grocery trip today!). I would be lost without my carriers, and I think all new parents should at least give them a try!

My first recommendation is always Dr. Newman's The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers. It's the unsung hero of breastfeeding books and chock full of good, straightforward advice. A friend gifted it to me, and now I always include it in baby shower gifts unless I know the mom plans to formula-feed.

Hmmm, I've done whole blog posts on the MANY things I recommend! Narrowing it down is difficult. I'm going to exclude things like boobs/bottles, diapers/potties, etc that are just obvious. So I'll go with a good baby carrier, specifically a Moby or Pikkolo or Gemini. And no, I'm not just saying that because you're you :)

A good carrier and a safe place to put baby down. With our first we didn't have a swing or a bouncer and quickly realized that we needed a place to put her so we could eat if we wanted 2 hands to do so.
