Welcome to this week’s edition of the Becoming Mamas’ Gift Guide! While some of the toys we’ve shared so far are suitable for 0-12 month olds, this week we’ll be focusing on toys made specifically for the littlest ones on your holiday shopping list. Last week, our gift-guide was about toys you can push, pull, and ride, and there are some great suggestions there for this age group, too. We previously recommended some books that are also good for this age group.
Books are a great gift for children of any age; board books and soft books are particularly nice for the smallest hands as they can withstand rough handling (and even some chewing!). In addition to our favorites we shared a few weeks ago, you might consider black and white board books like this one (since newborns are said to see these patterns best) or cloth books.
It’s no surprise to find Sophie on our list; she’s been showing up on toys lists everywhere these days. But with good reason – Sophie, from French toy maker Vulli, is made from natural rubber making it a nice alternative to many teething toys on the market. Sophie is the perfect size and shape for little hands as well – plus she squeaks! Callum also enjoyed Vulli’s “mushroom head people” teether/squeaker toys, Chan, Pie, and Gnon.
Haba Toys has a number of nice wooden rattles and teethers for little ones. Like all Haba Toys, these are made with baby safe paints and materials so you don’t have to worry about them going in little mouths. I love the bright colors and quirky designs and found that they held up well. Haba’s Froggy Wooden Teether and Rattle and Kringelringwere also well loved at our house.
Under the Nile is another company that produces eco-friendly baby products (mostly clothing with some soft toys). These lovies, made from organic cotton, are great for cuddling or for chewing. They are small enough for the smallest hands to handle and easily machine washable (a must with wee ones!). Callum also really liked the Under The Nile Frog Loviewhich has knobby hands and feets that are nice for sore gums.
Cloud b Twilight Constellation Night Light, Turtle
We had one of these when Gavin was born, and we still use it now that he’s almost 2. At some point, it became part of our nightly routine to turn on the turtle at “lights out.” It would chill him out enough that he would just look up at the ceiling and relax. It is a great toy that your baby will use long past the baby years.
Under the Nile Organic Cotton Veggies in a Crate
I love these little veggie toys! They are great for baby because they are soft and made out of organic cotton, but as your baby grows into a toddler, he’ll be able to use them as play food when he pretends to cook.
Green Toys My First Red Tug Boat
Babies love bath toys and this one is eco-friendly and fun. I wish we had this when Gavin was a baby. I had a hard time finding eco-friendly bath toys when he was a baby – or maybe I just wasn’t looking hard enough. You can even use it as a fun way to rinse out your baby’s hair.
Looking for a stocking stuffer? Gavin loved this teething pacifier when he was getting those early teeth.
